My favorite is the cairn (A7403073) – where is this at? It makes me wonder whether it is a landmark, or a memorial, or an altar–I’ve had experience with all three. Anyway, great shot. Can get a high resolution digital copy? Scratch that, I’ll happen to know you have much more important things going on — I hope it is all going well, Mike.

I saw your talk with Metzinger. It likely goes without saying, but I am not alone in being grateful you see these issues the way you do. As someone who has spent a lot of time in the hospital wards you refer those with Luddite anti-experimental science inclinations to, I can attest to their efficacy in changing perspectives and inoculation from complacency/bias towards the status quo re:human suffering. Seeing these kids on these hospital beds with their families gathered around them — it’s like having your cognitive light cone drawn and quartered. You either expand your scope of care/concern/goals or you break.

My son, Hal (12), told me the other day he wants to be a computational biologist. I told him so did I, but 40 may be a little late to switch tracks, though sometimes I feel like what you do is essentially a form of microeconomics (or perhaps it should be called nano- or pico-economics, depending on the scale of magnification on the agents in your models). Ive been meaning to read your and Ben Lyon’s nee paper–been busy with job market applications and life, though. I’m proud of Hal, though, for the size of his cognitive light cone. We talk about your work a lot in our house. I think he wants to help his sisters, Lulu and Maeby. Terminal illness sucks.

We’re glad people like you exist.

thank you for this, it’s very kind. Email me, I’ll send you the full-res photo. Don’t give up; 40 is not late – you don’t need to switch right away, you can sort of sidle onto it and work with others and then see how much you want to actually switch. I wish all of you the best.
