Some take photos to preserve time, others like to share their personal experience. Many aspire to provoke emotional responses and some choose to find beauty in the everyday or unseen.

If I may ask, “Why do you, Dr. Mike Levin, participate in photography?”

A few reasons. Preserving time is definitely one, and I also like sharing things I find beautiful in case it also gives a positive experience to others. But on a more practical level, it’s a kind of meditation for me. I do it daily at home and also when I used to travel, in interesting other places of nature. I find that the level of attention needed to find and take photos is just enough to distract a certain part of the mind while the other part is doing creative thinking. It’s just enough work for the eyes and hands to do – mostly on autopilot but not entirely – which allows me to think more deeply/broadly than possible when working out details with the full-attention “voice in the head” mode. There are practices people do in Zen meditation for example where they hold their thumbs just lightly touching – not a lot of thought needed but also you can’t just forget about it and let them drift – it’s a certain amount of contact (light touch, not press, not pull apart) and by keeping it in that range you’re using a defined degree of cognitive load. It’s a little like that, but I prefer moving to sitting, so I walk and take photos and it helps me think.
